Being a new Mom is such an exciting time but nerve-wracking too! You will hear lots of advice from people, but always go with your gut instinct since no one knows your baby better than you.
Caring for baby’s skin: Keep it simple! Stay away from heavily perfumed products. Fragrance is the number one sensitizer for a baby’s delicate skin. Start with your laundry detergent – choose one that is fragrance free and use slightly less than you would on your clothes. There is always some residue left on clothes and this can irritate your little one’s skin.
Bathing: It’s not necessary to bath a newborn baby everyday especially in the harsh winter months. This can strip away their natural skin barrier and cause irritation. A nightly wipe down with a warm washcloth works wonders. When you do bathe your infant always use warm (never hot!) water and test it before putting your baby in the bath. My favorite gift was a portable bathtub that I put on my kitchen counter so that my little one was at eye level and I could clean all the tiny delicate areas thoroughly.
It’s also great to have those special baby washcloths. They are thinner and softer than regular washcloths and can clean skin folds on baby’s little legs, arms and under the chin. Always start at the head and work your way down the body. Dry your baby’s skin thoroughly, especially all the crevices, this is important before dressing. Wet spots on the body can cause irritations too.
Diaper Changing: You can never change a diaper too often! Newborns need their diaper changed every two hours at least! A diaper can be a hostile environment to delicate skin and the less your baby has contact with a dirty diaper, the better and happier he or she will be!
For stubborn diaper rash, try letting your baby “free breeze” without a diaper for at least 30 minutes. Fresh air works wonders on skin that’s confined to warm damp places.
Diaper Cream: This is the single most important and frequently used product you will use on your baby. Many diaper creams contain fragrances and other irritants. Skinfix Diaper Rash Balm is all-natural, fragrance-free and packed with soothing botanicals. It has the highest recommended dose of Zinc Oxide which is the leading paediatrician recommended ingredient for curing a rash. Put a generous dose on clean skin with every diaper change and it will guarantee your baby stays rash free.
